We just added a post to our primary Domainate blog discussing the mass boycott and transfer out of domains from GoDaddy today by many upset customers over their support of the Stop Online Piracy Act. The post also includes our official comment and stance regarding the situation.
The interesting thing about the domain business is that it’s such a new business that almost no one actually in it aspired to be in it. When I was little, domain names didn’t exist, so I couldn’t dream of making a living with domains. Most people never even realize that there is a domain industry to begin with!
That said, my past was aligned in such a way that domains may have been inevitable for me. Unlike many people my age, I’ve been on computers since I was a kid, back when owning a computer was a luxury. I still remember 8 inch floppy disks and playing the text-only game named simply “Football”. When people find out that I’m involved in the domain business and am the CEO of Domainate.com, the question I’ll get asked first is, “How much is my domain worth?” The second most common question I get is, “How did you get started in the domain business?” In fact, when I’m asked to speak about domains, I’ll usually be asked to start off my answering that question.
Over the 15 years I’ve been involved in the domain industry, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know several thousand of part-time and full-time domainers.
